Walk Through the Alphabet

Outdoor games
  • 6–10 years
  • 30 min
  • outdoors

Find something on the street for every letter, in order, without turning back. The easy letters run out fast, and the last five turn an ordinary street into a search.

What you need

  • A street, a park or a yard
  • Chalk to keep score
  • Nothing else

How to play

  1. Start at the first letter of the alphabet and look for something nearby that begins with it.
  2. Say the word out loud and let the others agree before you move on.
  3. Chalk each letter on the path as you tick it off.
  4. Walk on to hunt the next letter without going back over old ground.
  5. Allow one skip for a letter that nobody can find anywhere.
  6. Race the last five letters and see who calls out a word first.
  7. Count how far you had to walk to get all the way through.
