Rubbed on dry hair, a plastic comb picks up paper snippets from a distance and even bends a thin stream of water. Electricity you can meet without a single wire.

What you need

  • Plastic comb
  • Paper torn into tiny pieces
  • Wool sweater or dry hair
  • A tap

How to play

  1. Tear paper into pieces the size of a fingernail and scatter them on the table.
  2. Rub the comb through dry hair or on a wool sweater for about twenty seconds.
  3. Hold the comb just above the paper and watch the pieces jump up to it.
  4. Open the tap to the thinnest stream you can and bring the charged comb close.
  5. Rub the comb again and count together how long the invisible force lasts.
