Purple cabbage water takes a different colour in every cup: pink with lemon, blue with soap, green with soda. The kitchen turns into a row of colour tests.

What you need

  • A few red cabbage leaves
  • Hot water (poured by an adult)
  • Jug and clear glasses
  • Lemon or vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Liquid soap
  • Spoon

How to play

  1. Tear the cabbage leaves and drop them into the jug.
  2. Pour hot water over them yourself, as this step is for the adult, and let it stand until it is purple and cool.
  3. Share the purple water between four clear glasses.
  4. Stir lemon juice into the first glass and vinegar into the second.
  5. Add baking soda to the third and a drop of liquid soap to the fourth.
  6. Line the glasses up from pink to green and let your child mix new shades.
