A board leaned against a step becomes a test track. Your child sends a coin, an eraser, a sock and a toy car down it and works out what slides and what gets stuck.

What you need

  • Flat board or stiff cardboard
  • A step or a stack of books
  • Small objects: coin, eraser, sock, toy car, pebble
  • Towel and foil or a plastic bag
  • Chalk or a stick

How to play

  1. Lean the board against a low step to make a gentle ramp.
  2. Send the objects down one at a time from the very top.
  3. Mark where each one stops with chalk or a stick.
  4. Cover the ramp with a towel and race the same objects again.
  5. Swap the towel for foil and compare all three tracks.
  6. Raise the ramp higher and ask your child to predict the new order.
