Who Lives Under a Stone
One flat stone or a fallen board hides a whole street of woodlice, worms and beetles. Your child counts the residents, watches them for a minute and puts the roof back exactly as it was.
What you need
- A flat stone, a log or an old board
- A stick
- Light-coloured plate or a clear jar
- Water for washing hands
How to play
- Find a flat stone or a fallen board in a damp shady spot.
- Lift one edge carefully and look at who lives underneath.
- Count the legs of three different creatures together.
- Move one of them onto the pale plate with the stick for a closer look.
- Let everyone go home and lay the stone back exactly where it was.
- Wash your hands and talk about why it is dark and damp down there.
