Fizzing Lemon Halves

Science
  • 3–6 years
  • 10 min
  • at home

Baking soda sprinkled on a cut lemon foams up the moment a spoon presses it. Two minutes of setup, and a small child can repeat the eruption over and over.

What you need

  • Lemon
  • Baking soda
  • Teaspoon
  • Deep plate or metal tray
  • Kitchen towel

How to play

  1. Cut the lemon in half yourself, as this step is for the adult, and lay the halves on the tray.
  2. Let your child squash the cut side with a spoon so the juice comes up.
  3. Spoon baking soda over both halves.
  4. Press with the spoon again and watch the foam climb.
  5. Add more soda every time the fizzing dies down.
