A pocket mirror turns every word backwards, and your child learns to write so that only the mirror can read it. Some letters, it turns out, do not change at all.

What you need

  • Small mirror
  • Paper or a notepad
  • Pencil

How to play

  1. Write a short word on the paper and hold it up to the mirror.
  2. Read out loud what the mirror has done to each letter.
  3. Write the same word backwards, letter by letter, so the mirror shows it the right way round.
  4. Hunt for the letters that look exactly the same in the mirror and make a list of them.
  5. Write a secret message in mirror writing and hand it over with the mirror.
  6. Try it with numbers and find out which of them survive the mirror.
