A thread hung in salty water grows sparkling cubes over a few days. Setting it up takes twenty minutes, and after that the jar is tended like a vegetable patch.

What you need

  • Glass jar
  • Salt
  • Hot water (poured by an adult)
  • Cotton thread
  • Pencil
  • Spoon

How to play

  1. Pour hot water into the jar yourself, as this step is for the adult.
  2. Let your child stir in salt spoon by spoon until no more will dissolve.
  3. Tie the thread to the middle of the pencil and lay the pencil across the jar.
  4. Lower the thread so it hangs in the water without touching the bottom.
  5. Stand the jar somewhere warm where nobody will knock it.
  6. Look at the thread every morning and draw what has grown.
