One finger on top of a straw and the water inside simply refuses to fall out. Your child becomes a pipette and carries a whole cup across the table drop by drop.

What you need

  • Drinking straw
  • Two cups
  • Water
  • A tray

How to play

  1. Fill one cup with water and stand the empty one next to it on the tray.
  2. Dip the straw in and let it fill with water.
  3. Press one finger firmly over the top of the straw and lift it out.
  4. Hold the straw over the empty cup and lift your finger so the water drops.
  5. Move all the water across, one strawful at a time, counting as you go.
  6. Try it once without the finger on top and talk about what the air was doing.
