Warm water, sugar and a spoonful of yeast slowly inflate a balloon on a bottle. Your child watches something far too small to see breathing out gas.

What you need

  • Dry yeast
  • Sugar
  • Warm water
  • Two small bottles
  • Two balloons

How to play

  1. Pour warm water into the first bottle up to two fingers high.
  2. Add a spoon of sugar and a spoon of dry yeast and swirl the bottle.
  3. Stretch a balloon over the neck of the bottle.
  4. Fill the second bottle with cold water and yeast but no sugar, and put a balloon on it too.
  5. Stand both bottles somewhere warm and check them every ten minutes.
  6. Compare the two balloons and talk about what the yeast has been eating.
