Wake Up the Yeast
Warm water, sugar and a spoonful of yeast slowly inflate a balloon on a bottle. Your child watches something far too small to see breathing out gas.
What you need
- Dry yeast
- Sugar
- Warm water
- Two small bottles
- Two balloons
How to play
- Pour warm water into the first bottle up to two fingers high.
- Add a spoon of sugar and a spoon of dry yeast and swirl the bottle.
- Stretch a balloon over the neck of the bottle.
- Fill the second bottle with cold water and yeast but no sugar, and put a balloon on it too.
- Stand both bottles somewhere warm and check them every ten minutes.
- Compare the two balloons and talk about what the yeast has been eating.
