Plate It Like a Chef

Cooking
  • 8–12 years
  • 35 min
  • at home

The same ordinary food, plated two ways: an everyday plate and a restaurant one. Your child learns the three rules real chefs use and the family votes on the result.

What you need

  • Whatever is in the fridge: cheese, boiled beetroot, cucumber, tomato, ham, boiled egg
  • Yoghurt or sour cream
  • Dill or parsley
  • Two identical plates
  • A teaspoon
  • Paper towel

How to play

  1. Slice everything into neat pieces yourself and lay the bowls out like a chef's station.
  2. Explain the three rules: three colours on the plate, one thing taller than the rest, empty space left around the edge.
  3. Let your child build an ordinary plate first, the way food usually lands at home.
  4. Now let them plate the same food again following the three rules.
  5. Add small dots of yoghurt with a teaspoon and one sprig of green on top.
  6. Wipe the rim clean with a paper towel and call the family in to vote.
  7. Ask your child which rule made the biggest difference, then eat both plates.
