Shape Your Own Bread Rolls
One lump of dough turns into snails, plaits and hedgehogs, one for each person. Kneading is loud work and the oven belongs to the adult.
What you need
- Wheat flour, about two and a half cups
- Rye flour, about half a cup
- Dry yeast, one small sachet
- Warm water, about one cup
- Salt, one teaspoon
- A spoon of oil
- Baking tray
How to play
- Mix the flour, yeast, salt and warm water in a big bowl until a rough dough comes together.
- Let your child punch, stretch and fold the dough on a floured table until it stops sticking.
- Divide the dough into fist-sized pieces, one for every person at the table.
- Roll long ropes together and shape them into snails, plaits, letters and spiky hedgehogs.
- Cover the shapes with a towel and let them puff up for half an hour.
- Bake the rolls yourself — 200 °C for about twenty minutes — and take the hot tray out alone.
- Let the rolls cool on a rack and eat them warm with butter.
