Sit still, listen in every direction and mark each sound on a map scratched into the ground, with yourself in the middle. Your child discovers that the forest is far louder than it seemed.

What you need

  • A stick
  • A patch of bare ground, sand or snow
  • A stone or a stump to sit on

How to play

  1. Find a spot where you can both sit down next to a patch of bare ground.
  2. Scratch a cross into the ground with the stick — that is the middle of the map, which is you.
  3. Sit still for three minutes without talking and listen in every direction.
  4. Mark each sound on the side it came from: a wave for wind, a dot for a bird, a dash for a car.
  5. Compare your maps and count how many sounds each of you caught.
  6. Walk twenty steps away, draw a second map and check which sounds disappeared.
