Ten sheets of paper and some tape have to hold a heavy book as high above the table as possible. Your child discovers that a rolled tube is far stronger than a flat sheet.

What you need

  • Ten sheets of paper
  • Tape
  • Two or three books of different weights

How to play

  1. Roll one sheet into a tight tube and tape it closed.
  2. Put a book on the single tube and watch how it folds.
  3. Roll three more tubes and stand them as legs under a flat sheet.
  4. Load the book on again and count how long the tower holds.
  5. Build a second storey on top and measure the height against a chair.
  6. Try one round with folded flat sheets instead of tubes and compare.
