Rain sounds different on an umbrella, on a metal roof edge and under a bare tree. Twenty minutes in waterproofs and your child has four new words for the same weather.

What you need

  • Waterproofs and boots
  • An umbrella
  • Rain that is actually falling

How to play

  1. Dress in waterproofs and go out while the rain is still falling.
  2. Stop under a bare tree and listen to how the rain sounds there.
  3. Move to a metal roof edge, then a wooden fence, and listen at each one.
  4. Name every sound out loud: drumming, whispering, tapping, splatting.
  5. Hold out an open palm and count to ten to see how many drops land on it.
  6. Decide together which place was loudest and go back to it once more.
  7. Peel the wet layers off in the hallway and listen to the rain from inside.
