A piece of bark, a twig for a mast and a leaf for a sail make a boat that really sails. Two boats and a ditch full of rainwater make a race worth arguing about.

What you need

  • Pieces of bark or flat sticks
  • Thin twigs
  • Large leaves
  • A stream, a ditch or a big puddle

How to play

  1. Find two flat pieces of bark of roughly the same size — one boat each.
  2. Push a thin twig into the bark as a mast and slide a leaf onto it as a sail.
  3. Mark a start and a finish on the bank with two stones.
  4. Launch both boats at the same time and run along the bank to follow them.
  5. Rebuild the boat that lost: move the mast, make the sail bigger, and race again.
  6. Fish both boats out at the finish so that nothing is left in the water.
