Skipping to a Counting Rhyme
A rope, a rhyme and a count that speeds up until someone trips. Older children start inventing verses where every line changes the way you jump.
What you need
- A skipping rope or a long piece of washing line
- A flat patch of ground
- Chalk
How to play
- Measure the rope: standing on the middle, the handles should reach your child's armpits.
- Start with plain jumps and count out loud to twenty together.
- Make up a rhyme where every line names a move: one leg, crossed arms, backwards.
- Speed the counting up a little with each round until someone trips.
- Let two of you swing a long rope while a third jumps in on the beat.
- Chalk the record on the path and try to beat it tomorrow.
