Whisk Against Fork

Cooking

Two bowls of the same cream, one fork, one whisk and a timer. Your child finds out which tool wins and stops the cream just before it turns into butter.

What you need

  • Cold cream, 33% or more
  • A fork
  • A hand whisk
  • Two identical bowls
  • A timer or a phone clock
  • Berries

How to play

  1. Pour the same amount of cold cream into each of the two bowls.
  2. Give your child the fork in one bowl and take the whisk in the other, or race a brother or sister.
  3. Start the timer and beat as fast as you can for one minute without lifting the bowls.
  4. Stop and lift both tools to see which cream holds a soft peak and which slides straight off.
  5. Swap tools and try again, guessing beforehand what will happen this time.
  6. Stop whisking as soon as it holds its shape — a minute more and it turns to butter.
  7. Spoon the whipped cream over berries and eat the results of the race.
