Berry Muffins in Paper Cases

An older child can run this one almost alone: measure, mix, fill the cases. The adult only opens and closes the oven.

What you need

  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Baking powder
  • One egg
  • Kefir or yoghurt
  • Oil
  • Berries, fresh or frozen
  • Paper cases and a muffin tin

How to play

  1. Let your child measure the flour, sugar and baking powder into a bowl and whisk them together.
  2. Beat the egg with the kefir and oil in a second bowl and pour it over the dry mix.
  3. Stir only ten or twelve times — lumps are fine, too much stirring makes muffins rubbery.
  4. Fold in a handful of berries and count the paper cases you have set into the tin.
  5. Share the batter out with two spoons until each case is two thirds full.
  6. Put the tin into the oven and take it out yourself — 190 °C for about twenty minutes.
  7. Let the muffins cool in the tin for ten minutes before anyone picks one up.
