The same carrot comes out completely different from the coarse and the fine side of the grater. Your child works through four foods and turns the heaps into a salad.

What you need

  • Carrot
  • Apple
  • Hard cheese
  • Boiled beetroot
  • A box grater
  • A wide bowl
  • Sour cream or yoghurt

How to play

  1. Stand the grater in a wide bowl and hold it steady with your hand throughout.
  2. Grate a little carrot yourself first, showing long strokes downward and no fingers near the holes.
  3. Let your child grate half a carrot on the coarse side and half on the fine side, then compare the two heaps.
  4. Agree the stopping rule: as soon as the piece is smaller than a matchbox, it goes to the adult.
  5. Work through the apple, the cheese and the beetroot, keeping the heaps separate.
  6. Mix carrot and apple with a spoonful of sour cream and taste the salad you just made.
