A House From a Big Box

The box the new appliance came in is a house, not rubbish. The child decides where the door and windows go, the adult does the cutting, and by evening there is new living space in the hallway.

What you need

  • A big cardboard box
  • A craft knife for the adult
  • Tape
  • Markers

How to play

  1. Stand the biggest box you have on the floor and open the top flaps.
  2. Let your child mark with a marker where the door and the windows should be.
  3. Cut the door and windows yourself — cardboard is too tough for children's scissors.
  4. Fold the top flaps together and tape them into a roof.
  5. Let your child draw bricks, a doorbell and curtains on the walls.
  6. Carry in a cushion and a torch and check whether it is comfortable enough to read in there.
