An egg carton turned upside down is a ready-made caterpillar back. Three cups, two antennae and a pair of eyes, and a whole brood moves onto the table.

What you need

  • An empty egg carton
  • Safe scissors
  • Felt-tip pens
  • Tape
  • Strips of paper

How to play

  1. Cut the carton into rows of two, three and four cups — the adult cuts.
  2. Turn a row over so the cups become a bumpy back.
  3. Let your child colour the back with felt-tip pens.
  4. Poke two holes at the front with a pencil and push paper strips in as antennae.
  5. Tape on paper circles for eyes.
  6. Line the creatures up and decide which one is the fastest.
