On the first frosty morning every blade of grass has grown white needles. A warm fingertip melts a dark print into them, and your child starts hunting for the coldest corner of the yard.

What you need

  • A frosty morning
  • Gloves you can take off for a second
  • The yard, a fence and some fallen leaves

How to play

  1. Go out on the first frosty morning, before the sun reaches the yard.
  2. Look for frost on grass blades, on a fence rail and on fallen leaves.
  3. Press a warm fingertip onto the frost and count how long the dark print stays.
  4. Breathe on a frosted leaf and watch the white pattern vanish.
  5. Find the corner of the yard where the frost is thickest and decide why.
  6. Come back at midday and see which side of the fence still has frost on it.
