Plan the Family Snack Board

Cooking
  • 9–12 years
  • 40 min
  • at home

Your child raids the fridge, plans a snack board for the whole family and works out how much of everything is needed. Real planning, and supper is solved.

What you need

  • Whatever the fridge holds: cheese, ham, apple, cucumber, tomato, berries
  • Rye bread or crackers
  • Nuts, seeds or raisins
  • A large board or tray
  • Paper and a pencil

How to play

  1. Send your child to survey the fridge and write down eight things that need no cooking.
  2. Ask them to pick five so that at least three colours end up on the board.
  3. Work out together how many pieces of each one, counting two or three per person.
  4. Cut everything into pieces yourself while your child arranges the empty board into zones.
  5. Let them fill the zones in groups, keeping wet things like tomato away from the bread.
  6. Ask them to write a small menu card naming the board and stand it beside the tray.
  7. Call the family, serve the board and ask your child what they would change next time.
