Shake Cream Into Butter
A jar of cream, a tight lid and a lot of shaking turn liquid into real butter in your child's own hands. The buttermilk left behind is a drink.
What you need
- Heavy cream, 33% or more
- A clean jar with a tight lid
- A sieve
- Cold water
- Bread and a pinch of salt
How to play
- Pour cream into the jar until it is about half full and screw the lid on tightly.
- Let your child shake the jar hard and count the shakes out loud.
- Stop every hundred shakes and look: first foam, then whipped cream, then a solid lump.
- Swap over when arms get tired — the whole thing takes ten to fifteen minutes.
- Pour the liquid off through a sieve and rinse the lump of butter under cold water.
- Spread the fresh butter on bread and taste it with a pinch of salt.
