A Landscape on Rye Bread

Cooking
  • 5–10 years
  • 30 min
  • at home

One slice of rye bread becomes a small country: a carrot sun, dill forests, cucumber hills. Your child paints with food and then tells the story of the place.

What you need

  • Rye bread
  • Curd cheese, cream cheese or butter
  • Carrot
  • Cucumber
  • Dill
  • Bell pepper or tomato
  • A spoon

How to play

  1. Cut the vegetables into rounds, strips and thin sticks yourself — the knife stays with the adult.
  2. Let your child cover a slice of rye bread with soft cheese, right to the edges.
  3. Decide together what the landscape will be: a forest, the seaside, a mountain valley.
  4. Build the ground first with cucumber strips, then add trees from dill and a sun from a carrot round.
  5. Add one small hidden detail — a path, a boat, an animal.
  6. Let your child tell you what happens in this place before you eat it.
