Push a row of twigs into a gentle slope and the same old ride down becomes a course you can actually lose. Steering with your heels turns out to be a real skill.

What you need

  • A sledge or a plastic snow saucer
  • A gentle slope well away from any road or water
  • Six twigs or bright rags as markers

How to play

  1. Choose a gentle slope that ends in open snow, not near a road, a fence or a pond.
  2. Push six twigs into the snow down the slope, alternating left and right.
  3. Walk the course up and down once on foot so the markers show clearly.
  4. Ride down and try to pass every marker on the correct side.
  5. Move the markers closer together for the next run.
  6. Count a run as clean only if no marker was knocked over.
