A sock with no pair goes over a hand and immediately has a mouth. Add eyes and hair and the back of the sofa turns into a theatre.

What you need

  • Socks that have lost their pairs
  • Paper circles or buttons
  • Wool
  • Tape, or a needle and thread for the adult
  • Markers

How to play

  1. Dig out the socks in the cupboard that have lost their pairs.
  2. Pull a sock over your child's hand and find where the mouth folds.
  3. Stick or sew two paper circles above the fold for eyes — the sewing is the adult's job.
  4. Tape strands of wool along the top for hair.
  5. Draw a nose and some freckles with a marker.
  6. Put on a show behind the back of the sofa and let the puppets argue about dinner.
