Dry lentils soak overnight and grow little white tails on the windowsill. Three days later they land on a slice of bread.

What you need

  • Dried lentils, peas or wheat grains
  • A clean jar
  • A piece of gauze or thin cloth
  • A rubber band
  • Cold water
  • A bowl
  • A ruler

How to play

  1. Let your child tip two spoonfuls of lentils into a clean jar.
  2. Fill the jar with cold water and leave it on the table overnight.
  3. Cover the mouth with gauze, fix it with a rubber band and pour the water out through it.
  4. Rinse and drain the seeds every morning and evening, standing the jar upside down at an angle in a bowl.
  5. Look for small white tails on the second or third day and measure one with a ruler.
  6. Rinse the sprouts and taste them on buttered bread once the tails are as long as the seeds.
