Honey, dish soap, water and oil poured into one glass refuse to mix and settle into neat stripes. Your child then drops in small objects and finds out which floor each one stops on.

What you need

  • Tall clear glass
  • Honey or syrup
  • Dish soap
  • Water
  • Cooking oil
  • A grape, a bottle cap and a paper clip

How to play

  1. Pour honey straight into the middle of the glass, about two fingers deep.
  2. Trickle the same amount of dish soap slowly down the inside wall of the glass.
  3. Add water just as slowly, letting it run over the back of a spoon so the stripes stay apart.
  4. Finish with a layer of cooking oil poured drop by drop.
  5. Lower the grape, the bottle cap and the paper clip in one at a time and see where each one comes to rest.
  6. Ask your child why the heaviest liquid ended up at the very bottom.
