Blow Up a Stack of Books

A flat plastic bag under four heavy books looks hopeless until your child breathes into a straw and lifts the whole tower. Air turns out to be strong enough to do the work of a jack.

What you need

  • Plastic zip bag
  • Drinking straw
  • Sticky tape
  • Four or five heavy books

How to play

  1. Lay the zip bag flat on the table with its opening at the edge.
  2. Stack four heavy books on top of the bag.
  3. Push the straw into the bag and close the zip tightly around it, taping the gap.
  4. Ask your child to guess whether one breath can lift all those books.
  5. Blow steadily through the straw and watch the whole stack rise.
  6. Add one more book at a time until the air finally gives up.
