Pepper That Runs From Soap

Science
  • 3–6 years
  • 10 min
  • at home

A plate of water sprinkled with pepper turns into a tiny race track: one soapy finger and every speck dashes to the edge. Your child watches the skin of the water tear in a second.

What you need

  • Flat plate or shallow bowl
  • Water
  • Ground black pepper
  • Dish soap

How to play

  1. Pour water into the plate so it just covers the bottom.
  2. Sprinkle pepper over the whole surface until it looks like a starry sky.
  3. Ask your child to dip a clean finger in the middle and see that nothing happens.
  4. Put one drop of dish soap on that finger and dip it in the same spot again.
  5. Watch the pepper race to the edge and talk about why the water pulls away.
