Giant and Tiny Shadows

Science

The same little toy throws a shadow the size of a mouse or the size of a bear, and your child controls which by walking a torch back and forth. Hand spans on the wall turn the game into measuring.

What you need

  • Torch or phone light
  • A small toy
  • A bare wall
  • A dark room

How to play

  1. Wait until dusk, close the curtains and switch off the lamps.
  2. Stand a small toy on the table in front of a bare wall.
  3. Shine the torch at the toy from the far side of the room and look at the shadow.
  4. Carry the torch slowly closer and watch the shadow grow into a giant.
  5. Measure the biggest and the smallest shadow with your hand spans.
  6. Ask your child where to hold the torch to make the shadow exactly as tall as the toy.
