Pairs That Make Ten

An ordinary deck with the picture cards taken out becomes a memory game where only pairs adding up to ten may be kept. Counting and remembering have to happen at the same time.

What you need

  • A deck of playing cards
  • A table or a clear patch of floor

How to play

  1. Take the picture cards out of the deck and count the ace as one.
  2. Lay twenty cards out in a grid with the patterned backs showing.
  3. Turn two cards over on your turn and say the sum out loud.
  4. Keep the pair if it makes exactly ten, otherwise turn both cards back.
  5. Take one extra turn every time you keep a pair.
  6. Count your collected cards when the grid is empty.
