The Walk That Tells Itself

Outdoor games

A traveller sets out from your own gate, and at every corner your child decides where they go and what they meet. The route makes the story, and the story makes the route.

What you need

  • Your own street or a park
  • A stick to mark the turns
  • Nothing else

How to play

  1. Start the story at your own gate: a traveller sets out and has to reach the sea.
  2. Let your child choose left or right at the first corner and say what the traveller meets there.
  3. Take turns adding one sentence at every corner you reach.
  4. Make the direction part of the story: we turn left because the wolf went right.
  5. Lay a stick on the ground at the turn that was hardest to choose.
  6. Bring the traveller home when you reach your own door.
  7. Retell the whole journey backwards on the way up the stairs.
