Make Water Walk Along Paper

Science
  • 4–9 years

  • at home

A strip of paper towel becomes a bridge, and cold tea climbs up it and drips into the empty glass all by itself. Your child comes back every ten minutes to check on a journey nobody is pushing.

What you need

  • Two glasses
  • Strong cold tea
  • Paper towel
  • A pen or two rubber bands

How to play

  1. Brew strong tea, let it cool, and fill one glass while the other stays empty.
  2. Fold a strip of paper towel long enough to reach from one glass into the other.
  3. Push one end deep into the tea and drop the other end into the empty glass.
  4. Mark the level in both glasses with a rubber band.
  5. Come back every ten minutes and watch the dark line creep up the paper.
  6. Stop when both glasses hold the same amount and talk about the tiny channels inside the paper.
