The Evening Watering Round
Give your child a small watering can and a route: this pot, then the tomatoes, then the thirstiest bed. Poking a finger into the soil first teaches more about plants than any explanation.
What you need
- A small watering can, or a plastic bottle with holes in the cap
- Water
- A garden bed, pots or window boxes
How to play
- Fill the can only half full so your child can carry it without spilling.
- Walk the route together first and poke a finger into the soil of every plant.
- Water only the ones where the soil felt dry a finger deep.
- Pour slowly at the roots and count to five for each plant.
- Hold a thumb over the bottle holes to make a fine shower for the leaves.
- Check the same pots in the morning and see which ones drank everything.
