Give your child a small watering can and a route: this pot, then the tomatoes, then the thirstiest bed. Poking a finger into the soil first teaches more about plants than any explanation.

What you need

  • A small watering can, or a plastic bottle with holes in the cap
  • Water
  • A garden bed, pots or window boxes

How to play

  1. Fill the can only half full so your child can carry it without spilling.
  2. Walk the route together first and poke a finger into the soil of every plant.
  3. Water only the ones where the soil felt dry a finger deep.
  4. Pour slowly at the roots and count to five for each plant.
  5. Hold a thumb over the bottle holes to make a fine shower for the leaves.
  6. Check the same pots in the morning and see which ones drank everything.
